To Have a Baby or Not to Have a Baby

That really is our question.

Heath and I have been talking for the last month or so on whether or not we are in a place to have another baby. I graduated last summer and have spent the past 6 months at I job that I love… so we are currently blessed with a double income. We are currently still renting a 3 bedroom apartment that is similar in size to the 3 bedrooms homes that many of our friends have. We are also still suffering through some credit card debt which realistically will take us another 2-3 years to completely pay off. We have a small savings account.. but all in all.. we are improving our situation one pay check at a time. We are happy.

I currently have the Mirena as our form of birth control.. and I really love it. I had absolutely zero complications associated with it.. and we are coming up on 2 years with it! I have a consultation appointment on August 19th with my new OBGYN.. who is actually my old OBGYN that I had when we were expecting Serenity.

Our friends think we are crazy… but we don’t see it. I mean.. realistically.. there will always be something that makes it not a good time to have a baby. Life happens.. and we are okay with that. Originally, I had a list of 4 things that I wanted before we decided to have the Mirena removed… I wanted:

1) a New Car

2) $1,000 in our savings

3) No credit card debt,

4) a House

Thanks to my amazing husband… we got the new car . In fact, it was my  Mother’s Day gift! We are halfway to our savings goal and we are slowly picking off our credit card debt. As far as a home goes.. for us.. that is years off.. maybe even as far as 5-7 years due to our credit situation and lack of savings. Again.. we are okay with that.

So, I am not really looking for approval, but reassurance that my logic makes sense. I mean.. let’s say that I have all 4 of my “requirements” and then some….  who knows what could happen to put a damper on what seems like the perfect situation. We really want to have a big family.. and we are pretty set on 4 children.  We are in no rush to put ourselves on an ovulation or sex schedule.. we are fully prepared to wait 6, 8,12 months post Mirena removal to actually conceive… We are ready for the let life happen approach.. and writing this all day really made me think that we are making the right choice for our lives and family.

  1. I would look at more how far apart do you want your kids spaced. You’re absolutely right that life is never going to be perfect, your list will never be checked off – even if those 4 items were complete – there would be more on them – that’s life. :) I’d focus on your family on the ages of the kids. Yes finacial responsibility is extremly important to factor into that as well, but if you know for sure you want a third – then again I say look to the age spacing you want between your kids and go from there. :)

Be aware though I’ve been told the 3rd child is the ‘game changer’ you’re out numbered.

Haha! Thanks for your thoughts! Our oldest is 4 and our youngest is about to be 2. Initially… I was kind of hoping they would both be in school before we decided to have another… but my husband was the one who approached me about it. I work night shift.. so he is aware of the huge responsibility that this would be.

Most days.. I already feel outnumbered… but man.. I didn’t think too much about that!!

  3. My friends thought we were nuts when we were pregnant with our first. My husband was in school and I was working full-time. I told them that you can only plan so much, but when you feel it is right, you feel it is right. Those same friends now 5 years later wish they would have tried to have kids earlier because of complications physically they are having now.

You are right, in the end it doesn’t matter what they think! For me I ask myself “am I physically ready? Emotionally ready? Spiritually ready? Financially ready? etc.” (and financially meaning, we can afford to have another member of our family without living out of a box on the street!)

@Michelle , We really feel ready.. we believe we can pull it off. I mean.. I thought when we were expecting Caeden that it was going to be impossible. I was in nursing school.. in fact, I went back to school the day after I was discharged from the hospital! It was hard.. but looking back.. it was a fantastic experience and a story that I will be proud to one day tell the kids. We are a strong family and doing things the hard way is the way I always seem to do it. I thrive under pressure.. hahaha.. kind of silly!
